University of Massachusetts Amherst Field School

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is offering a 5 week summer field school in historical archaeology and heritage. The field school will combine new methods of collaborating with museums and community groups as well as standard archaeological survey and field procedures at a number of sites throughout Western Massachusetts, while also introducing students to the wide and complex African American history of the region.

We will collaborate with sites at three locations in the Connecticut River Valley that are developing programs that involve the material dimensions of African American history of the region. Students will devote two of the five weeks to assisting their field site in furthering their African American heritage projects. By the end of the five weeks, students will have worked closely with community members and partner organizations to produce final projects related to their site that will be presented to their peers and the community.
