Job Description

This inclusive and educational student-operated café provides our campus community with food choices that are good for both people and planet. The café’s mission is informed by four guiding principles: 1) Inclusive – to serve a diverse customer base reflective of the campus community, 2) Affordable – to maintain prices that are lower than elsewhere in the Portland area for similar value, 3) Educational – to provide educational opportunities that align with the mission, and 4) Sustainable Sourcing and Practices – to source goods and supplies that meet the established sourcing criteria and maintain practices that contribute to social, ecological, and economic sustainability. The café is a Student Operated Service within Student Activities and Leadership Programs.

 

New staff will have a unique opportunity to contribute to the legacy of the café on PSU’s campus by contributing to its re-opening scheduled for January 5, 2015. The café with the following positions: Front of House (FOH) Cashiers and Baristas and Back of House Grill Cooks and Food Prep. We hire people at all levels of experience making the café a place to share your personal skills as well as being a place to learn and grow in other areas. These positions report to the Coordinator of Student Operated Services.

 

Work Description

Front of House: Customer Service & Baristas – Candidates will be responsible for serving customers in a friendly, inclusive manner in addition to beverage preparation, retail sales, responsible cash handling, and keeping the workspace and the café floor clean.

 

Back of House: Cooks & Food Prep – The candidate will prep and cook whole foods for breakfast and entrée within an active, collaborative kitchen environment. Attention to kitchen organization and cleanliness

 

Shift Leads – Between two to four shift leads for FOH and BOH will be selected from the candidates who demonstrate greater degrees of experience in the above areas.

 

Additional responsibilities for all positions may include dishwashing, opening, closing, serving, and customer service. Interested candidates may have the opportunity to serve on a Personnel or Finance Working Group. There are often opportunities to learn other positions and skills throughout the cafe.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Cumulative PSU GPA 2.50 or higher for undergraduate students or 3.0 cumulative PSU GPA for graduate students
  • Earn a 2.5 undergraduate GPA or 3.0 graduate GPA for each term enrolled
  • Enrollment in and successful completion of a minimum of 6 undergraduate credits or 5 graduate credits per term (except summer)

 

The successful candidate’s application will demonstrate:

  • Minimum six (6) months experience working in a café or other type of customer service experience
  • Ability to shift quickly between multiple tasks and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated contributor to the café’s success
  • Strong commitment to the café’s mission
  • Enthusiasm for learning and serving the PSU community
  • Punctuality
  • Flexible availability for interviews, orientation, and training between 12/08/2014 and 01/04/2015 (excluding holidays), especially Jan 2-4

  • Barista skills
